Sorry this is so late. I had a wedding rehearsal, calling hours for a friend, a funeral, worked a wedding, played for mass and played for a memorial service – I had a busy weekend!

1.

Cross country season is now over – legit! No more practices and no more meets for this season. I am proud that Rosie made it to the Varsity level her freshman year and that she lettered. She’s still trying to work on her speed and all the mental aspects of the sports To help her with that, I got her this for part of her Christmas present.

But for now, I think we’ll just enjoy the off-season and running just for fun and fitness. It will be great not to have to drop everything in the middle of the afternoon to get to the park for practice. It will also be nice to start dinner around 3 or 4 instead of 1 or 2 or worse – 6 or 7!!

And I’m enjoying my elliptical again!

2. Homeschooling gives us a lot of flexibility and one of the things I could be flexible on this semester is how Rosie tackles her course work. We decided to put her literature course on hold until after the season was over. It was just too much on top of her other work and the intense practices. Now she can work on it solidly until Christmas break. She’ll have even more time to work on it in three weeks because she’ll be done with Biology for the term. With the co-op, everything is compressed and sped up – (getting a 32-week course done in 24 weeks) so she’ll be able to put the effort she has been giving Biology on to literature. We’ll use the same intensity to get that all done before the spring term starts.

3. I worked on a wedding this weekend. The bride is an Olympic pole vaulter! She was very, very sweet to work with. The officiating priest is also a guest at our parish. It was fun to work with him. For the most part, he let me run the rehearsal. I have this down to such a process now that I can get everything covered, even with a very large group, in about 45 minutes if everyone is sober and paying attention. He paid me a very nice compliment at the end of the night. It was one of the nicest experiences of my 17 years of doing this work!

4. The husband of a friend passed away last week. He was in the best of health, took great care and pride in his healthy habits and even went on vigorous vacations that included glacier hiking. He was a beloved husband and father and he was always kind to those around him.

When my baby was stillborn, Mr. Pete and I took a few pictures of his little body just as a remembrance. I put those pictures into an album and I hung on to that during the funeral and the luncheon afterwards. They weren’t great pictures and his little body was a little misshapen. I guess I was afraid to share the album. But my friend came up and asked to see the pictures and I let him. He looked kindly over each one and when he gave the book back he thanked me and told me how beautiful my son looked.

He must have shared kind moments like that with many people because the church was packed with people who had stood for 90 minutes the night before during the calling hours. I feel honored to have known him.

5. This is the month of All Souls. I have my basket of holy cards of all our dead friends and family out on the table and I hope to get to the cemetery every day for a rosary to gain the indulgence.
