1. My brother-in-law died last week on Divine Mercy Sunday from a glioblastoma.
Last November I was able to snap this picture of Mr. Pete with all of his brothers together – the Fab Five! We were there to celebrate my BIL’s birthday – and what a celebration it was! Memories were made and stories were told. It was a wonderful life and his death leaves a big hole in the family.
2. Noah’s college track season is over, but Rosie is still running meets until the middle of the month.
This week she had a revelation – that she is the only one holding herself back! In practice, she has shown determination. I hope she gets the results she wants at the upcoming meet and beats her times in the 1600 and the 800.
3. A few years ago, I wrote a piece called When A Pet Dies in a Catholic Home for Catholicmom.com.
It gets comments every now and then. People want to eulogize their own pets and basically commiserate with others that they hope their pets will be with them in heaven.
But this week I got a particularly harsh comment
It amazes me how Americans refer to the Catechism as if that’s the only authority and end all on all matters. Reminds me so much of hardline sola scriptura Protestants. Doesn’t Catholicism teach us to follow traditions too? I will look to the lives of saints and also the Bible.
The same commenter mentioned she was thinking of leaving the chuch in a later comment,
I’m sorry you are going through this. I’m grieving as well. I was born and raised Catholic as well as being Italian. In addition to Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Francis of Paola resurrected his pets and referred to them by their last names after death. Saint Rocco was even saved by a dog… I’m so heartbroken so many Catholics have such awful beliefs about animals. I’ve even considered leaving my faith. I know that’s terrible to say, but it doesn’t seem logical
I love my pets.
I would never leave the church for them.
But my article wasn’t even about that. It was two stories from my life about how we handled the death of a beloved pet. I didn’t think it was controversial, but now the administrators have closed down comments permanently. I’m a little sad about that because I think it was a nice place for people to come and share their loss. One bad apple as they say …
4. Rosie just finished her writing class based on the works of Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings books. She had to write her first big essay. We got it back and she scored a 99 with some very good feedback. I think she’s ready for high school writing next year.
5. We are winding down our school year, but Rosie is going to get a head start on British Literature this summer.
