1.   My life right now consists of forcing myself on my elliptical for 30 minutes or 6 miles, whichever comes last, housework, homeschool, teaching Miss C. to read, and then three nights a week I am stuck in the middle of nowhere at this track, about 30 minutes away,  for an hour and a half – and then at a track meet on Sunday. I know running in high school will have its challenges, but I really don’t think I’m going to miss this part of Rosie’s middle school running experience. On nights I’m not at the track, I’m working or practicing.

2.   Next week Rosie has a full week of parties!  Her Tolkien writing class is coming to an end and she will be attending that on Thursday. Friday is the cast party for her Up the Down Staircase production that she participated in. Then she has a birthday party on Saturday. Of course, this is all fit in between the cursed track practices, soccer and everything else that’s going on.

3.   We’re also going to do our end of year assessment test with the California Achievement test. I’ll be interested to see how she does this year. Last year she managed to pull off the 99th percentile in math – the only one my immediate family to ever do that!

4.  I’ve been mesmerized by the college admissions scandal. I’m kind of with Lori Loughlin on this one in that I had no idea this was such a big deal.

A couple of years ago Noah had a friend who had the goal of going to an ivy league college. He had exemplary scores on the ACT, had a superior GPA, had participated in sports and community activities. He was even Valedictorian of his class. Plus he was just an all-round great kid who would be an asset to any university.  Yet he got turned down by every one of those schools. He now attends a local university and has been thriving there.

Which makes me wonder how Jazz Jennings was able to get into Harvard.

5.  My industrious daughter worked very hard last year and got a nice little income tax refund check. In high school, she had taken the Dave Ramsey High School Course, she is really interested in making her money work for her. So next week, she and I are going to go down to Edward Jones and invest her money. It’s a start!

6.   Don’t forget, the Early Bird pricing for the 2019 Homeschool Mom Conference is still going on.  It’s only $15 for 100 talks, a digital swag bag, and vendor hall discounts and coupons.

Seriously, why wouldn’t you buy it?

  1. Great work mom/ Grandmother. Math/Running/girl—those are right in line with a great college scholarships.
I highly recommend using Schawb or some other low cost brokerage instead of Edward Jones. Although I have had some success through full priced brokers, I found that their bottom line is their income, not mine. If she has an idea of what stocks or ETF she wants, she can do that type of investing pretty easily. TIPS are purchased very inexpensively. If she needs direction, I recommend a Certified Financial Planner not a broker.

  2. I’m impressed with your daughter starting investing so early. That’s when it really counts!
