1.  After a full year of struggling with my knee, two drainages, three injections, an x-ray, and physical therapy, I finally had an MRI on Monday!

Remembering my commitment to be a good health care consumer, when my doctor’s office called to schedule the test, I asked them for the most cost-effective place to have an MRI. They sent me to a place about an hour north of my home, but I should only have to pay between $300 and $500 compared to a starting price of $1000 at the hospital, so I’m really glad I asked the question.

Incidentally, I did the same thing last year when I was prescribed physical therapy. I called the place they wanted to send me to and got their pricing and then I called around. I saved hundreds of dollars by just checking around town for the best price.!

So I went into my MRI experience very excited. I thought finally, I would find out exactly what was wrong with me and I could take steps to fix it! I honestly thought they would tell me I had a small meniscal tear that would need a little trimming and rehab and then I would be good to go.

That turned out not to be the case.

I do have two meniscal tears that were described as complex and large with other descriptive words including displacement and fraying.

And that’s not the worst of it. I have severe narrowing and grade 4 chondral loss and osteophytes and ligamentous bowing and other stuff that I lost track of. Let’s just say the words, “knee replacement” were mentioned but my doc is going to check with a surgeon he is meeting with next week, so we’ll say.

Here’s the thing. I’ve been able to keep walking. My first half mile is always painful but after that, I literally feel no pain at all. I can walk 2.5 miles in an hour. That’s not super speedy, but it’s not bad either. So I am stunned that my knee on the inside is much worse than I could have imagined.

Honestly, when you’re getting a bad medical result from your doctor, it’s hard to take it all in. The one word that did stick out in my mind was “Elliptical.”  So I’m in the market of a good one. So far my Facebook Friends have suggested the Nordic Track and ProForm. I’m open to suggestions!  Send me an e-mail at mrsL@mydomesticchurch.com with your elliptical experiences or just comment on this post.

Tis the season for getting those transcripts in good shape – especially for high school juniors and seniors. How can you make transcripts that make your student stand out to college admissions offices?

If you want to succeed in the high-stakes college game, you and your teen must dare to be different. But how you choose to communicate their education to colleges is just as critical as your educational “road less traveled.” Your transcript needs to be unique but not strange, multi-dimensional but not scattered. It can be a tough needle to thread.

My favorite expert in all things homeschool high school, Lee Binz, The HomeScholar, is holding a new workshop, “Creating Transcripts for Your Unique Child” on January 15 and 17. If your child is not in the center of the bell-shaped curve, or has some unusual gifts or challenges, this class will help you make an awesome homeschool transcript.

Lee will show you how to create a homeschool transcript for gifted, struggling, artistically-enthused, STEM-inclined, previously public schooled, or failure-prone children. This class will help, whether your child has been unschooled or is bookishly earning college credit through CLEP tests. You’ll feel more confident soon!
January 15 2:00pm (Pacific Time)
and
January 17 11:00am (Pacific Time)

Who would have thought that your child’s eclectic interests and free-range learning style would be the stuff to make college dreams come true? Let Lee show you how to set them apart from their peers and help colleges fall in love with them.
There is nothing “odd” about a teen who shows a passionate interest in one or more areas of their education. They are tomorrow’s world changers. Let Lee show you how to present them in a way colleges will understand. Register Now
