1. I’ve been on a sort of blogging break this week. Haven’t been overly active on social media either after news of the Las Vegas shooting broke on Monday. As predicted there would be lots of finger pointing, lots of calls for gun control and then arguing back and forth. I just wasn’t interested in reading all of that this time around.
But a few things stood out for me – The hero who threw his body on top of a woman to protect her from the bullets. What he did was just unspeakably heroic and brave. But the man also closed the woman’s eyes to protect her from the sight of all that terror. How did he know to do that? Was it training? or had he witnessed horrible things before and he just instinctively knew to do that. I just thought that made his gallant act even more remarkable.
2. Noah is taking bioethics this fall. One night at the dinner table he told me, “We’re studying the Terri Schiavo case next mom. I might not be able to be on your side on this.”
I just about lost it. Long, long time readers will remember that I spent a lot of time writing about that case. I even called the office of the bishop in Pinelles County to encourage him to act on her behalf. (He didn’t.)
But I didn’t feel that Noah’s professor was really presenting all of the facts of this case as Noah kept arguing with me that she couldn’t feel anything or respond. A quick search of Youtube changed his mind. I think when it comes up, perhaps he will be her advocate after all.
This whole incident makes me glad that he’s living at home because even though he is attending a faithful Catholic college, they still get some things wrong. Teaching that Terry Schiavo’s death was merciful and moral is one of them.
3. My goddaughter started a 7 day black and white picture challenge – take a picture in black and white that represents her life – it can’t include people. She took a photo of her breast pump. I ‘m certain that at this point in her life as a mom, she spends a lot of time with that pump for her baby. I remember thsoe days.
So this was my first photo of the challenge – is there any piece of equipment that a mom spends more time with than the family vehicle?
4. Izzy is enjoying her new job – and they must like her because they gave her 30 hours next week. The house is very quiet without her and I miss her throughout the day. Not just because all of the child care then falls to me, but because I just miss talking to her and hearing her laugh!
It took her a while to feel confident on the cash register, but they had her working it all day today by herself and she feels better. What she really enjoys though is putting up the displays! She has already used her salary to purchase some art supplies – that’s a nice artistic perk to working at a craft store!
5. The piece I am practicing for my concert in April is very challenging. I have bad dreams about it. But after reading this book, Less than a Minute to Go, I feel more encouraged and confident that I can do what I need to do to pull this off – and enjoy it! I’m hoping to play it with the confidence of this young lady!
6. My General Science class is starting to get into the interesting stuff! After enduring two weeks of physics and simple tools, we start archeology next week. I can’t wait! I’m going to tell them about the Dead Sea Scrolls. I also want to share the story of finding Richard III’s remains and the twins in the tower! Hopefully this will spark their interest in this chapter!
