Outside my window…

Rosie running on the banks of Lake Michigan during our extended weekend.

I am thinking…
Two Dots!
about my Aunt Dot who is 96 years old. Rosie is named for her so when they get together we have Aunt Dot, and Rosie Dot. I saw her for the first time in a wheelchair this weekend. My cousin sent it to her and it is certainly a nice one. I certainly understand that with the passage of time it’s to be expected that at her age, she would need a wheelchair. It still surprised me a little bit.

As we were leaving town, we dropped by Aunt Dot’s house to drop off something. There was a woman working in the flower garden – it looked as if she might be weeding. I thought maybe it was one of Aunt Dot’s daughters, or perhaps a neighbor or friend. But when we pulled in the woman stood up and it was indeed Aunt Dot. She may need a wheelchair from time to time now, but she still looks like a woman 20 or more years younger when she’s working in her own garden! Aunt Dot has always been one of my role models and heroes.

I am thankful…

I’m thankful that Mr. Pete and our three youngest kids could go to the 68th (or 69th – I think we aren’t exactly sure which) family reunion with me. And I am so grateful that I was raised to appreciate my extended family and that this reunion was such an important part of my childhood.

In the kitchen…
Ugh – another hot week – Probably more grilling and simple foods.

I am wearing…
Black capris, pink T-shirt, and socks.  I have a lot of laundry to do from the long weekend.

I am pondering...
A couple of weeks ago I got this comment  in my page on Childbirth.  So since the commenter left her phone number, I called her back.  I think probably many of you might know of Jeanne Stark. She’s a little infamous on Catholic blogs, but I was a little surprised to hear from her.  I’m not exactly a “mommy blogger” per se any more.

Any way, I called her back. Here’s what I learned – despite all the bluster and bravado on line, Jeanne was really nice to talk to. We actually had a very pleasant conversation. Jeanne blogged about it here.

Now, my take on some of what we discussed is a little different –

  • The reason I started homeschooling my first born in the first place is here.
  • The relative threatened in the parking lot by a disgruntled parent was my mother. That was the event that made my mother decide that it was time to get out of teaching after 29 years. I mean honestly – when the parents start blocking you in the parking lot and start screaming in your face, maybe you can do something better with your time. Mom chose to retire.
  • The “gasp” Jeanne thinks she heard when she told me that they don’t advocate homeschooling at Franciscan University was probably more a laugh cut short.

Kimberly Hahn – wife of the famous theology professor at Franciscan University, Scott Hahn, was one of my early homeschool influences. I also found this on the Franciscan University web site:
Franciscan University encourages students who have been homeschooled to apply for admission. Homeschooled students must meet the regular criteria above for high school seniors.

  • I also told her about my son’s good experiences with running on the high school running teams and that my daughter ran for a middle school team, and that we were part of a co-op, but I’m not sure she heard that.  This is not fear. It’s freedom.
But all and all it was a nice conversation and I think if I get into any other internet disagreements, I might ask to talk it out on the phone because this really was a good experience.

I am going…
