1. Father daughter dance
What does a guy do the night before his 57th birthday? He takes his 9-year-old daughter to the father-daughter dance of course!
Then he stands with the other dads while all of the little girls giggle and dance in the center, and sing in loud high voices when the songs from “Frozen” are played. But about four times, he goes on the dance floor with his little girl to “cut a rug,” especially for the grand finale of “YMCA!”
2. I noticed that The White Queen
It’s the story of Elizabeth Woodville, wife of Edward IV and sister-in-law of Richard III. She eventually becomes grandmother of Henry VIII and is the ancestor of the royal line all the way to the present day.
There seems to be some debate on Amazon about how historically accurate the series is, but a lot of that seems to be kind of nit picky. It certainly made Izzy and I want to find out more about the era and read about these interesting people.
I will say that this series was A LOT more historically correct than The Tudors. I had originally hoped that Noah could watch The Tudors to fit in with his British History course, but the gratuitous sex scenes made that impossible, and then the historical inaccuracies made the point moot.
The White Queen also had some nudity and sexual situations in it but those were easily fast forwarded through and the ones they did include either advanced the plot or supported the themes of the story.
3. It seemed kind of serendipitous then that there was news about Richard III in the news this weekend. It seems the king’s bones had been discovered a few years back and after being examined forensically, were being re-interred this weekend in a coffin made by his great x 17 nephew!
By the way, the actor portraying Richard III in The White Queen series was wonderful!
4. We have a new piece of art at our church for Lent.
Someone in the parish put up the funding and it was donated to the church. There was a little bit of discontent on my pastor’s blog about money for the poor etc. But I look at it this way – commissioning a piece of art supports the artist and his family, the art suppliers, the shippers and the packers! So it helps to keep people gainfully employed so that there are fewer of the poor to worry about!
Also, since my own daughter is a gifted artist, I’d like to think she could make a living at this if she wants to – or at least supplement her income. So there’s that.
5. I think I’ve reached a new level of maturity. This week Noah and I had a very rare, but very volatile argument complete with yelling and tears. He then stormed off and had his piano lesson, which I guess didn’t go very well, and then off to track practice. When he came back the first thing he did was put his arms around me and say he was sorry and I threw my arms around him as well.
The thing is, we have such a great relationship that we don’t know how to stay mad at each other. Any temptation that I had to give him the cold shoulder melted as soon as I saw him. Maybe I’m not as much my grandmother’s daughter as I thought!
6. Calvin brought the ambulance by the house for the first time EVER! So the kids got to see their brother in his uniform and his place of work. They also got to ask him questions about his job. It was nice that they had an opportunity to do that before he moves away next month – definitely a nice memory for them.
7. “Gasp!” – the sound many homeschooling moms are making as they realize there are only two more months of the regular school year! Some moms started practically the middle of July so that they could be done by April 1 – a practice that I never fully understood and could never get the hang of even if I wanted to! Others feel like they are behind in everything. I’m kind of mixed – We have math and science nailed for all of the kids – it’s social studies and English that could use more work and will probably spill over into June.
And for me there is a gasp with a rasp as I realize that my baby boy only has one more year of school left!!
