7-Quick Takes

1.  I’ll never forget the first time I saw it.  I was nursing my brand new baby girl, and I felt a bump on her foot.  I thought maybe they had pricked her heel in the nursery for a blood test and didn’t think much of it.  But the bump never went away.  It never hurt her much either. Izzy played soccer and even ran cross country and her bump didn’t stop her from doing anything.

Until this year.  Then the pretty high heeled shoes felt off, her boots were uncomfortable and even walking barefoot hurt.  It was time for her bump to go.

2.  We had looked into having it removed five years ago.  The surgeon we saw at that time talked about getting skin grafts off of her stomach and being in the hospital for days.  We left there and never went back. I’m glad we waited.  This was Izzy’s decision.  She wanted to get rid of it and she made sure that we made progress in finding a surgeon, getting her testing done and then showing up on time for her surgery date last Monday.

They tried to start her IV – getting stuck twice in one arm and then three times in the other.  Eventually the anesthesiologist came and got it started in her wrist.  So at least we know that about her- that she is a tough stick – something to keep in mind for the future.

Izzy and I were together most of Monday morning, learning how to use her crutches, and then doing all the pre-op stuff.  And then she was off to surgery, and I went to the waiting room.

3.  An hour and a half later, her foot looked like this.  Her surgeon said the mass was vascular, and well encapsulated, and she got it all and doesn’t think it will grow back.  It was like a tangled chain of vessels that just formed in her foot in utero.  Strange.

4.   They weren’t kidding when they said they wanted her foot elevated.

5.   She is non weightbearing for two weeks.  But it wasn’t a total loss.  Izzy managed to get all the way through Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain this week and has a good start on Huckleberry Finn.  Izzy, Noah and I are also 30% of the way through the Jungle.

6.  Today, Rosie and I went to the discount store to by Izzy some skirts.  She thinks she’ll just be more comfortable getting around the house if she has skirts on instead of wrestling with pants. I learned something about my youngest daughter – she is an AMAZING shopper.  She found exactly the right skirts, in the right size and color and for the right price.  What a joy to shop with her.

7.  Tonight we are going to enjoy our Sandra Bullock marathon.  We’ve crammed Gravity, The Proposal, While You Were Sleeping, and All About Steve into three days.  Hoping to find something a bit more suspenseful tonight.  Maybe The Net!
