I am thinking…
About something really funny that happened in our homeschool today.
Rosie and I were reading out of her second grade Pathway Reader. We were reading the story where the little boy Peter wants to learn how to milk cows. In fact, he is so excited about learning to milk cows, he tells his father that he will have to buy four more cows, so that Peter will have as many cows to milk as the adults do!
Peter’s dad smiled at him and told him that it will be a while before he can handle four cows on his own, and that for his first time he would milk Bossy the cow, because she is older and because she isn’t giving very much milk these days.
Rosie looked at me quizzically, “Mama, how come the cow isn’t giving as much milk?”
So I explained to her that after mamas have their babies, they have lots of milk. But as the baby grows up and doesn’t need to drink as much and starts eating other things, their need for milk diminishes and the mama’s milk supply decreases accordingly. Rosie took that explanation well, but after she started thinking about it, she asked me, “Mama, will Bossy the cow ever give more milk again?”
To which I replied, “Yes Rosie. She can give more milk once she has another baby.”
“Well how can she have another baby?” inquired Rosie.
Well this was a little bit of a rabbit trail I hadn’t intended to go down, but I told Rosie that they would have to put the cow with a bull until she was bred, and then she would have another baby.
“Bread?!” Rosie was astonished.
“No sweetie. A baby calf has to have a mommy and a daddy,” I said. Rosie nodded understanding.
“They’ll put Bossy in the field with a daddy bull”, (under my breath) “play a little Barry White, and voila! A baby calf in few months later!”
At this point the teens raised their heads and said in unison, “Who’s Barry White?”
Which lead us to this youtube vide, and an explanation about the 70s, costuming, and how Barry always sang with a full orchestra!
It took a few minutes for all of this to sink in, but as Noah was going back to his seat he said, “We went from a sweet Amish book about milking cows, to Barry White and the 80s. This is Herman Melville Homeschooling!”
Indeed.
I am thankful…
For fun loving kids who indulge my need to impart cultural literacy from my perspective to them when the opportunity presents itself.
I am reading…
Unlike most of today’s young women, I really long for an older woman to be my Titus 2 role model. I think I found one in Penny Lord. When she passed away last week I ordered her autobiography that she wrote with her husband Bob and it has been so wonderful for me to read about her triumphs and tragedies and how she held on to her faith through it all. Really an important read. If you are a middled age – ish Catholic woman looking for some inspiration from another down-to-earth Catholic woman, this might be the book for you!

- Get ready to get my taxes done. I’m taking them to a preparer this year, but I have a lot of stuff to get ready first.

- Pathway readers for Rosie and the Wand for Language arts. Rosie too has graduated to Busy Times!
I am Learning…
How to rock this grain free cooking!
I made my own yogurt!
And then used that yogurt to make cinnamon and honey muffins with coconut flour!
and honey mustard chicken!
A few plans for the rest of the week:
My granddaughter will be coming over a few afternoons a week. I need to make transitioning her into our homeschool day a smooth one. Also keeping fingers crossed that piano will NOT be cancelled this week.
