Some thoughts on the Zimmerman vs. Florida outcome

I’ve been watching the aftermath of this trial all week with bemusement.  I wish I could give it a little bit more of my time and attention, but I live in a neighborhood that is dotted with little memorials here and there to murder victims.  Assaults and murders happen here all the time.

Just down the street is a T-shirt and some flowers in front of a tree where a body was found in a car by a kid walking to school.  Just this week a father and son were stabbed to death by a former high school football player.  That guy turned himself in to the police after making it all the way to Chicago.  Murders happen every day and they don’t make the national news.

The death of Trayvon Martin after an altercation with George Zimmerman was a LOCAL Issue.  There’s nothing even that interesting about it.  Trust me folks- the murders we have here in Akron are a lot more fascinating.  This one for example. 

But somehow, the death of Trayvon Martin has captured the attention of the media and they’ve decided to run with it. They even became active participants in the prosecution by changing the sound bytes to help convict George Zimmerman.

While I think everyone is trying to make this a racial issue (even though Zimmerman is Hispanic – although for trial purposes he is a WHITE Hispanic – a term I doubt we’ll ever hear when talking about immigration reform), I think this is really a woman’s issue and even a gay bashing issue.

First of all, I’ll bet most of the people out there “Protesting for Trayvon” haven’t even watched an hours worth of the trial coverage.  The six female jurors did.  Summoned to serve, disrupting their daily lives to do their civic duty, these six women sat through two weeks of testimony and evidence.  Then then spent an additional 15 hours going over everything they had seen and heard before delivering a verdict.

And how are they rewarded?  By being told by the media and the public that they got it wrong.  That they were too stupid and probably too prejudiced and blind to see “the truth!”  Well way to go America!  Your true view of the citizenship of women is showing!!

But in the midst of the riots we have Trayvon’s girlfriend Rachel Jeantel on the Piers Morgan show where another stunning revelation is made!  According to Rachel, Trayvon was creeped out because he thought Zimmerman was a gay predator and so TM went back to give him some “whoop ass.”  And also according to Miss Jeantel, George Zimmerman should have just taken his “whoop ass” and everything would have been fine.

So to be clear, Rachel Jeantel, the last person to talk to Trayvon Martin, admitted that he did indeed assault George Zimmerman, and he did it because he thought he was gay.

Stunning.

The only media person I have seen say anything about this is Rush Limbaugh.

So there you have it.

• If a young African American male assaults you with his fists, it’s just “whoop ass” and you should just take it. 
• It’s okay to be anti-gay if you are a minority teenager, and 
• We can’t trust women to handle the truth. 

oh – and this is all endorsed by the President of the United States.
