My Dearest Daughter

Spread the love

In 1958 my mother got married and moved across the country. These are the letters written to her, mainly by her mother, between 1958 and 1960, as well as other artifacts from my family’s past. Others in the series are in my del.icio.us file.

Another letter, this time undated, from my mother’s only brother  – the man my sister and I grew up referring to only as “Uncle.”

Dear Sis and Bro.

Well, one good turn deserves another so they say, so I guess while it’s snowing and blowing outside today, I’ll do my tood turn.

Thanks a lot for your very nice letter sis.  I almost did think you forgot me, but then I realized how busy youare too.  Don’t worry about writing me a pesonal letter.  I enjoy the ones you write the folks.  So just write all of us at the same time and that’s alright.  Thanks a lot though.  I did enjoy it, esp. when you were telling about New Mexico.  You know one of my hobbies is learning about different places.

Now sis, I can’t promise, but maybe I can go back with you after you visit here.  Dad isn’t working now, and if he doesn’t go back to wrk by then, I maygo back and spend two weeks with you.  I won’t promise that for sure though, but I will work on it.  It would be a very nice break.

I suppose Dad told you he didn’t do so well deer hunting.  ALl he got was a sprained ankle.  Paul Hammond got a 16 point buck.  he showed him to me and he was a beauty.  He also gave us part of him (meat).

At the Knights of Columbus meeting last Tuesday night, we had what you call “deer burgers,” and they were very good.  One of the members and his son each got one and they wanted to treat the fellows at Kof C meeting.  They had some beer fo course, and we had quite a time.  He’s a very nice guy.  He’s quite well off I understand.  Last summer he went to Europe, to the World’s Fair, Rome, and a number of other places.  He showed the movies he took at a pre-meeting.  These deer burgers are deer meat fixed just like hamburgers and they were very good.

The K of C meeting last week was a beautiful one.  They held a memorial service for the deceased members.  It was very nice.  Tonight I go to a Court of Honor Boy Scout Program.  Always something.

Monday night is Young Professionals.  I hope Dorothy Barrett will be there.  Wow.  Thanks for introducing me to that club.  I have a lot of good times with th em.  They really enjoyed the hayride last fall too.  I suggested having another one next eyar.  We’re getting ready for our Christmas Party now.

So you had quite a snow storm out your way?  We’re getting one today.  I’ll bet the ole wind is going 60 miles an hour the way it sounds.  Really drifting up the snow.  Ole man winter finally came.

I didn’t get to go to Springfield.  Dad spained hsi ankle and he could hardly hobble for a couple of days.  So I thought I’d better stay home.  I’d just as soon stay home  for the holdays anyway.

Sis, I have a problem.  Couldyou please give me an idea what to get mom and dad for Christmas?  I’m a terrible shopper.  Guess I’ll go to town next week and look around, to see if I could get any ideas.

Dad and I did pretty good on pheasants last fall. We each got four and King caught two crippled birds.  He sure is a nice little dog.  He retrieved everything this year.  After this storm blows over, dad and I will try our hand at rabbits.

We really had a good crop of corn this year.  We picked it all with our little picker.  I’m sending you a
picture of our piles.

Well another football season is over.  Ole MSU didn’t do so well.  They started uot alright but like the Tigers, ran into trouble.  They lost five games in a row.  That’s bad.  Looks like Iowa goes to the Rose Bowl this year.  They’re on top of the heap.  The Detroit Lions didn’t do so well either after winning the championship last year.  Well, that the way it goes.

Say is there a good size college in New Mexico?  I heard them talk about their team this year and it sounds like a good team and college, or pardom me if it’s a university.

Well folks, my wrist is getting tired, and now doubt your eyes are too.  Thanks just loads for remembering me in your prayers.  I keep you in my prayers too.  I hope you have many years of happiness.

As I said, I can’t promise right now if I can come, but I’ll work on it.  Thanks again for a nice letter.  Write again when you have time.

Bye now and God love you,

Cal.
