7-Quick Takes

1. We have not started school yet. And we’ve enjoyed it! Instead we’ve let the other natural rhythms of this time of year, soccer, cross country, music lessons, etc., settle into their place and disrupt the easy going ways of summer.

That has been a big enough shock to the system!

So next week we will start hitting the books again.

2. We have resurrected our homeschool group. We had our first meeting in a few years last night and 24 people showed up! That was great! Someone thanked me for accepting the leadership. It wasn’t so much accepting it as taking it. It was a silent coup but no one seemed to mind. What the group becomes and whether it survives,  remains to be seen but at least for now, there is a desire on the part of the members to stay together.

3. My daughter’s art work keeps amazing me.

4. My homeschool group has weekly hikes through the park system every Friday. I insisted that the boys go even though they didn’t want to. Izzy and Rosie both made some very fast friends, just as I was hoping that they would! But Sam, Gabe and Noah kept to themselves. Long-time readers of this blog will know that Sam and Gabe are very social creatures, but for some reason, they just refuse to mingle with these homeschooled kids. Gabe said, “Other than being Catholic and homeschooled, we have nothing in common mom.”

This may be my fault. Since I had Rosie I have not been making a strong effort to drive the extra distances to have the boys attend a lot of homeschool activities. I don’t know if I’ll be able to turn that around or not, but at least the girls seem to be accepting and accepted.

5.  Mr. Pete’s business is booming.  At least he is busy and there is a lot of work to do.  Now if only he could get paid.  It seems that the school systems are just not paying their vendors, although they continue to ask for services.  It’s just weird how the state run schools run their business.  Mr. Pete has told some schools that until he is paid, he can’t continue to work for them.

6. The nice thing about having a new driver in the house, is that whenever I ask him to drive anywhere by himself he is so anxious to do it!  Right now Sam is over at the soccer fields striping the lines – because I let him go by himself!  Pretty smart eh?

7. Mr. Pete does have a car for Sam.  It’s a Subaru he picked up for $600.  He bought a new fender and a used hood.  He could put the whole front end together if the frame wasn’t slightly bent.  Apparently he knows a place that can straighten it, but because Mr. Pete is working literally from dawn to dusk, he hasn’t had time to drive the little squeejaw car over there to have it done!  I contemplating having it towed just to get it over with!
