1. Calvin and his roommate were having difficulties over housekeeping and money. I guess I’m glad Cal is going through this first with a roommate instead of a wife! Anyway, Calvin’s roommate ended up leaving and now Cal has rent for two with a salary for one but he is determined to soldier on, at least for a while. Afterall, he does have 9 months left on his lease! I am pretty impressed with my son.  He really seems to understand the difference between wants and needs, something that I wasn’t sure he had a good grasp on before he left home.

2. I had a wedding rehearsal this month where the wedding party was there on time but the couple didn’t show up until almost 30 minutes later – and I still ended on time!! I think after 6 years I finally have this crowd control/rehearsal routine down to a science!

3. My back feels tons better! I can drive now without a lot of pain and I can bend over. Unfortunately, because I have not been able to bend over no one has done any laundry for the past three weeks, except for emergency loads of socks and underwear. Also, what has fallen on the ground has pretty much stayed in the ground unless I have been able to ask, beg, shame or cajole someone else to pick it up – EVEN if they weren’t the one to drop it! I did manage to make dinner almost every night and the one or two nights I just couldn’t they had peanut butter and jelly. I pointed out that if anything serious ever does happen to me they will be wearing dirty clothes, while living in a hovel with nothing to eat, to which Sam said, “Don’t die mom!”

4. As I was going through my mom’s old tax returns, I found a $5 bill in one of the old envelopes from the mid 1980s.  Apparently she had overpaid her teacher’s dues and they were reimbursing her.  So I called all the kids around and they were pretty amazed that this had been there that long and that grandma never seems to have known about it.

“Wow kids, this $5 bill has been in this envelope for over 20 years.  That’s a long time.”

To which Izzy replied, “Yeah it’s really old.  Look how much younger Abraham Lincoln looks on it!”

5.  When asked what she wanted for a birthday present, Rosie quickly told me that she wanted a “Boy Barbie.”  That means she wants a Ken Doll.  It seems that all of her Barbies have had to date Harry Potter’s Friend Hagrid because he is the only male action figure we have that is tall enough to date Barbie.  Apparently Rosie doesn’t find him an acceptable date.  So yesterday I went to Target and got Ken on sale for $6 and so I sprung for a fancy tuxedo too.  Izzy excitedly met me when I pulled in to see what I got for her sister.  She kind of sighed when she saw Ken.

“What’s the matter?” I asked.

“Oh, nothing”

“Come on Iz, what’s wrong” I persisted.

“Nothing. It’s just that I know when our Barbie’s double date from now on, I know who’s going to get stuck with Hagrid!”

Izzy’s birthday is the end of this month.  I guess I know what to get her!

6.  This month looks like this – men’s breakfast, birthday party, battle of the bands, ACT/SAT writing course, driver’s ed, an open house for a friend’s son out of state, music camp, swimming lessons, another birthday.  I don’t think the summer days are lazy as much as they are crazy!

7.  I’m starting my workout program back up today.  My publicly stated goal is that I want to be able to run with the kids when they start cross country this fall. We’ll see if I make it.  I have found that if I have a lot of physical housework or gardening to do, I cannot work out first thing in the morning and then do that stuff after or I will just have no energy at all around 3 p.m.  It works out much better in reverse as far as getting things done.  However, if I don’t have a lot of stuff today (HA!) working out in the morning works out well, or at least it did until I hurt my back.
