Works for Me Wednesday – coping with abdominal and back pain

When my first son was born in 1989, I found recovery from the Cesarean section to be one of the most difficult things I had ever done. How was it possible to hold my baby in one arm, and protect my aching abdomen and Cesarean scar with the other. I walked around hunched over for a few days, like an old woman until the healing started.

When my daughter was born by Cesarean in 1999 it occurred to me that I didn’t need to use one of my arms to protect my body – why didn’t I just ask for an abdominal binder??!! but more to the point, why didn’t anyone at the hospital suggest one? That  Abdominal Binder (like this one)  provided comfort and made it possible for me to go with just plain Tylenol instead of a prescription narcotic for pain. When Rosie was born via Cesarean in 2005, I asked for one before I even got to the hospital. Wearing it as close after delivery as possible immediately helped control the pain and consequently, that was my best Cesarean birth.

Last week I had a little altercation with a marble stair (the stair won!) and at home I found myself bracing my backside with my hands whenever I wanted to standup, sit or move. It occurred to me that my body shaper like this one, might just do the same thing! And voila, it did! I have been wearing mine now since Saturday and it really helps me to do without the pain meds and gives me more mobility. In fact, I was feeling so good yesterday afternoon that I took it off – big mistake! I plan to wear it all day today. Again, this is something that was never mentioned at the emergency room, but that I have found to be extremely helpful.
