My Dearest Daughter

Spread the love

In 1958 my mother got married and moved across the country. These are the letters written to her, mainly by her mother, between 1958 and 1960. Others in the series are in my del.icio.us file.

As I was going through mom’s things I came across some beautiful needle work that was done by my grandmother and my great-grandmother!

Here are some of the close ups of that work.

This little cloth is fascinating because it looks like they took an old flour sack and used it for needle work.  If you look closely you can seen the old print from the flour sack still on the cloth!

Grandma did send mom a Easter Card that year!

I was also happy to find this special card, sent to mom by my grandma’s good friend, Mrs. Sunsteadt.   The Sunsteadts and my grandparents went way back and in fact, for most of my growing up years, I remember having big holiday meals at the Sunsteadt’s house!   When my grandparents lived in Flint, MI my grandma’s brother inadvertently set their house on fire with a cigarette.  Mr. Sunsteadt saw the flames and ran into the house to save my mother who was only a toddler.  The back of her head had been singed, but she was otherwise okay.  My grandparents were forever grateful.

In this card, Mrs. Sunsteadt wishes mom well on the upcoming event, which is the birth of her first child.
