1. I got a nice note on Facebook from Sarah’s mom, giving all of the information that was difficult to extract from Calvin – like where they were staying. But it sounds as if they have great accommodations and the ride down wasn’t too tough. You know, Calvin was homeschooled until 8th grade. He has since then, swam on a public school swim team, worked at two jobs, finished an EMT program and now he is going on trips with friends that he made on his own. So I don’t get what all the commotion about homeschoolers not being socialized is about. If Calvin is my exhibit A – he’s doing pretty well.

2. A funny I heard the kids say this morning. We were doing math and Noah had the following problem.

Three classrooms had 26, 24, and 27 students respectively. What was the average number of students in each classroom?

Noah read through this and asked, “What does ‘respectively’ mean?

To which Izzy replied, “It means they aren’t allowed to be mean or yell at the students!”

sigh…I love vocabulary.

3. We were walking into the store today and I noticed that Rosie has some pretty auburn highlights in her hair.

“Rosie, you have red in your hair!”

To which Rosie threw her hands over her head and shrieked a blood curdling scream!

“No, it’s alright Rosie!” I reassured her, “The red is supposed to be there. It’s very pretty!”

Reassured, Rosie smiled and kept walking but then she asked, “How did the red get on my hair mama?”

“God put it there sweetie.”

“Oh!!!” Rosie smiled and nodded knowingly, “He’s a pretty nice guy!!”

4. I had some play time here. It’s always amusing to me when sola scriptura Christians try to persuade me to their point of view from scripture, when I’ve already mentioned that I reject sola scriptura. The syrupy, “If they’d open their hearts to the Holy Spirit… blah blah blah is a turn off for me too.

I dunno. I think it’s more fun to debate Progressive Catholics – at least the guidelines are more clear.

On the other hand as I approach this big half century mark, I am finding less and less interest in apologetics. I’m kind of at a point where I believe, what I believe and I know what I believe, and if you don’t, you’re just wrong. LOL! Which doesn’t mean we can’t be friends or even friendly, but I’ll have less tolerance for anything else. I’m also happy with my comfortable shoes!

5. Mr. Pete went to visit Mom at the nursing home yesterday and set up her remote control for her. She was happily clicking away when he left. It’s pretty clear she was never going to be able to get up to change the channels and so why not let her have this little pleasure.

6. We had a pretty decent homeschool week despite everything. I have a plan that includes working our butts off until our assessment and then take a few weeks in August off – contingent of course on how far the kids get on their math!

7. We finished Because of Winn-Dixie today! An absolutely charming, funny book that we spent way too much time on today just because we couldn’t bear to put it down! An excellent summer read and, I might add that although the protagonist is a girl, my boys, ages 13 and 11, LOVED this book.
