1. They took my mom’s drain out of her surgical site today. She asked the nurse what it was draining anyway and he told her, “I think it’s from your pancreas.” Mom said that scared her because it reminded her of Patrick Swayze, and “isn’t he dying from pancreatic cancer?”

I was speechless.

2. Today I went to the grocery store with Rosie. She begged and pleased to ride in one of the kiddie car carts. I usually resist this because in my experience, she doesn’t stay in the seat and it makes the entire trip hard to deal with. But when I was thinking about that Bea Arthur/Maude/ late-life baby stuff I realized that my baby is growing up fast and soon she won’t be able to fit in those cars. So I let her ride in it today and she was very good.

3. I had an “a ha” epiphany moment today. Gabe has been doing really a crappy job with his school work. He is a little lazy and argumentative. So I made him my special project today and we ended up having a great day! So it occurred to me that this kid WANTS TO BE MY HANDS-ON STUDENT. He wants to sit by me, he wants me to tell him what to do, he wants immediate answers and feedback. So while maybe my other kids are independent learners, this one isn’t. And now that I realize that, maybe I can structure my day more around this, because the truth is I really enjoyed being around him too! Gabe is funny, smart and enjoyable to talk to. I could use a little one on one time with him too!

4. A few years ago, a liberal feminist blogger took me to task for my reaction to 9/11. As far as she was concerned that was an event for the people who lived in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, and everyone was stealing their calamity. I was surprised then that this same liberal feminist blogger had not a word to say about Air Force One flying over New York and the World Trade Center Site and scaring many people. Not. one. word.

5. Calvin is going on vacation with his girlfriend, her mother and father and brother. They will miss my birthday and Rosie’s birthday. I’m too tired to be hurt by it. He’s been working hard, he deserves a break. At least he’s going with good people. But I sat straight up in bed when I thought, “what happens if grandma dies while Calvin is gone?” That would be horrible. He didn’t go last year because Sarah’s grandma died just before they were supposed to leave. Could that happen again? or worse?

6. When Protestant apologists insult and offend their Catholic participants, their comment section shows it. Compare Squirrel’s number of comments from last week, to this week’s.

7. The buyer who hated the bassoon we sold her apparently likes it enough to keep it! She hasn’t sent it back yet. If we don’t get it by Monday, then Paypal is supposed to give us our money back. My fingers are crossed. She got a good instrument for a good price. I think she was trying to knock a few hundred off the price so she could make a bigger profit reselling it. This certainly has been an interesting experience.
