  • ACS :: What Are the Risk Factors for Ovarian Cancer?Well this sort of sucks. My mom had a hysterectomy and one of her ovaries removed around 1965. And now she has stage 3 ovarian cancer… sigh.tags: cancer
    • A hysterectomy
(removal of the uterus without removing the ovaries) also seems to
reduce the risk of getting ovarian cancer by about one-third.

  • American Papist: Not Your Average Catholic!: AmP picks Carlson for St. Louis … now here’s what you need to know about himThe new bishop of St. Louis!tags: Catholic, bishops
    • Bp. Carlson is already a legend among Catholics in Michigan, for the following reasons.
He is a vocations magnet and cultivator par excellance, creating a culture of vocations in his diocese and supporting his candidates through their formation and education. Before he came to the diocese it had not had a vocation for four years. In the past two years Bp. Carlson has ordained seven men and there are close to 20 currently in formation (I’ll double-check my numbers).
    • He is a passionate defender of life, personally hopping on the bus with the young people of his diocese to attend the March for Life in DC whenever he is able. He will not shy away from speaking out in defense of life – that’s a promise.
    • I have heard he enjoys a particularly close relationship with Pope Benedict. In 2006 when Carlson was in Rome and Pope Benedict heard about it – the pope cleared his schedule and sent a message to Carlson saying that he wanted to meet with him.
In 2003 Bp. Carlson told Tom Daschle he could no longer call himself Catholic, when he was his bishop.
    • He called a Eucharistic Congress in 2007 and has gradually been re-establishing sound liturgical practice in his formerly-liberal diocese of Saginaw.
  • SPIN METER: Saving federal money the easy waySpeechless. tags: obama, areyousorryyet?

    • WASHINGTON (AP) – Cut a latte or two out of your annual budget and you’ve just done as much belt-tightening as President Barack Obama asked of his Cabinet on Monday.
The thrifty measures Obama ordered for federal agencies are the equivalent of asking a family that spends $60,000 in a year to save $6. Obama made his push for frugality the subject of his first Cabinet meeting, ensuring it would command the capital’s attention. It also set off outbursts of mental math and scribbled calculations as political friend and foe tried to figure out its impact.
