Like a ton of bricks

Spread the love

I was really feeling overwhelmed yesterday. Soooo much transcription work to do. Soooo much homeschooling to do. Soooo much housework to do. It was like an never ending pile of stuff to get done with no time to do it.

But last evening I had been invited to come in and record some music with our church group for a CD we are making to give to our retiring pastor. I didn’t really have the time or energy for one more thing, but I wanted to be a good team player and I wanted to musically participate with this project.

There is another flutist with our group who is a high school 10th grader. As it turned out she was only going to attend part of our rehearsal/ recording session because she is preparing for an AP test to be given on Friday.

So Mr. Pete and I show up at practice. The dates were apparently wrong for the recording so we didn’t do that. I ended up rehearsing for Sunday’s mass, which I had no intention to play for,and what promised to be a quick 30 minute gig turned into a 90 minute rehearsal.

On the way home Mr. Pete and I stopped at the local convenience store for some pop – and locked our keys in the car!! Three hours later around 1:00 a.m. we were home, safe and sound, although wet and weary.

As I checked my phone messages for the evening I found my choir directors message (recorded about two hours before the rehearsal) where she told me the session had been postponed. She also told me the other flutist would have to leave early because of her test saying, “she has to focus right now on what is most important.”

Thud…

There is a saying that no good deed goes unpunished. I think Mr. Pete and I lived that one out last night. But I can’t help but think that with all the responsibilities that I have to do right now, what was I focusing on? … and do I really have time in my life for things that are going to take me away from that focus – even if it is a pleasant diversion. I guess I’ll think on this as I drive the kids to their piano lessons today.

  1. Oh Elena.. what a rough day.. I feel so bad you locked your keys in your car.. I’ve had that happen too.. not fun!!

  2. Hummm- let’s take some postitive time with this. You played – not just for the practice- but God. You and Pete had some time together (although you were wet and frustrated- it was still time) and you were thinking of doing something to honor your pastor….
You might not have thought you were concentrating on the right things- but it seems these two things were things you haven’t had much time for either…..
Now that my husband has been ill for four months- I think certain things are set up so I see that the most important things are standing right in front of ME.Give that great guy of yours a kiss and call it a night!
