In typical drive by fashion – the media doesn’t get mommy blogging

Spread the love

Blogging, and in particular “mommy blogging” was the focus on the Today Show this week. I am dumbfounded that this was a “news” item! It apparently just occurred to NBC that not all blogs are Geek blogs, or News blogs, or interested in correcting all the misinformation from the established news sources! I think that says something about the mainstream media – and it’s not good.

But what fascinated me as a blogger is the blogs they chose for the segment so I did a little digging around. Of course Heather Armstrong aka Dooce has been around for a while. Her blog really took off when she got fired for blogging, a start that received nary a mention during the segment.

The other three bloggers were unknown to me so I decided to check them out. Two of them had Google page ranks of 5 and one didn’t have a PR, or the PR wasn’t working when I checked it out. Of the three one was more of a blog collaborative web site, so I concentrated on the other two, Wouldashoulda.com and Motherhooduncensored. They were both very similar to Dooce in that they are written by liberal women, with liberal profanity, pro-liberal causes, oh and big supporters of Blogher. Big surprise.

The real headline will be when NBC, CBS, ABC or even CNN discovers CONSERVATIVE right wing mommy bloggers – but I don’t think they’re ready for that yet.

  1. I agree–there is a definite B.H. bias toward a certain type of female blogger, regardless of traffic.

If you look at Blog Top Sites, you can see that SEVERAL conservative mom blogs outrank those 3 bloggers (not Dooce, of course) featured on Today.

And of course there are even more conservative women bloggers who are not listed there whose traffic far exceeds the Today show.

Look the queen of understated blog stardom, Crystal of Money Saving Mom! You couldn’t get more conservative, religious, or well-trafficked than she.

Yet they are rarely picked up by the mom blog cognoscenti.

  2. Well, I should take that back. A week after the Today show 2 of those bloggers have zoomed up the traffic rankings.

  3. LOL! Because people like us have been checking them out! WIll they stick? We’ll see!
