Works for Me Wednesday – Backwards Edition – Older Kids and Easter

Spread the love

As the kids have gotten older, of course they have learned about the true meaning of Easter and have participated in the religious observances. This year Sam will be singing with the parish choir for the Easter Vigil and Gabe will be serving. I’m hoping Calvin will attend and bring his girlfriend. The ten and underders will go with Mr. Pete and I to Easter Sunday mass (where we have to sing again with the choir at 11:00).

But we’ve also tried to include other celebrations like Easter Egg Hunts, and and hiding their Easter Baskets. As the boys have gotten older, making the baskets and hiding them has become more and more of a challenge. We don’t make this into a mini-Christmas with the super expensive baskets, but we do include some pretty good Candy and Mr. Pete had been very inventive in hiding the baskets from the teenagers.

But this year Calvin is 18 almost 19 and Sam is 15. Do we keep doing the Easter Basket thing? Or is it time for them to help us with the baskets for the younger kids? How do you handle Easter with your teen and young adult kids?

  1. Kids are never too old for Easter Baskets… even when they’re not really kids anymore. It’s kind of like stockings… it’s just part of the tradition. I’m 22 and love getting a stocking at Christmas and Easter Basket at Easter. It just makes the holiday!

  2. My mom did Easter baskets for all the kids until we had all moved away and didn’t all come home for Easter anymore. Then she went to one large basket for everyone in the house to share–filled the chocolate etc. The biggests gifts that ever showed up in individual baskets were pantyhose or new socks for Easter.

  3. I have 9 children and the oldest 2 are 19 and 17. The last couple of years they have helped with the Easter egg hunt and with the night before Easter breakfast preparations. They both really enjoy hiding the eggs! But, Daddy and Mommy still do all the secretive stuff with stockings……..:)

  4. I remember when my parents turned the corner. My mother was sick, and on Saturday night my dad went to the drugstore and bought a giant brown paper bag full of candy. He dumped it on the table and asked us (the three oldest children) to pass it out in the empty baskets.

I think I was about 15 at the time and I was SOOO excited to get to do the baskets (even if it was, literally, dumped in our laps! LOL!)
