LD OnLine :: Math Learning Disabilities  Annotatedtags: homeschooling, math

Many learning disabled students have persistent trouble “memorizing” basic number facts in all four operations, despite adequate understanding and great effort expended trying to do so. Instead of readily knowing that 5+7=12, or that 4×6=24, these children continue laboriously over years to count fingers, pencil marks or scribbled circles and seem unable to develop efficient memory strategies on their own.
For some, this represents their only notable math learning difficulty and, in such cases, it is crucial not to hold them back “until they know their facts.” Rather, they should be allowed to use a pocket-size facts chart in order to proceed to more complex computation, applications, and problem-solving.
Some learning disabled students have an excellent grasp of math concepts, but are inconsistent in calculating. They are reliably unreliable at paying attention to the operational sign, at borrowing or carrying appropriately, and at sequencing the steps in complex operations. These same students also may experience difficulty mastering basic number facts.

              1. Find the connection between the subject and your own interests: Once you find out how the topic will help you in areas that do interest you, it’ll be a lot easier to learn.
              2. Invent games: This doesn’t have to be too complicated. Just exercise your creativity and think of some way to make the subject more enjoyable. After all, this was how most of us learn our first lessons in life! Who didn’t learn at least a little something about money from Monopoly?
              3. Reward yourself for learning: This is a tactic used a lot in dieting. Follow your diet to the tee during the week, and reward yourself with a piece of cake on Sunday. Use the same logic for learning. Maybe you can watch that new movie if you finally dominate a difficult lesson.
              4. Teach others what you just learned: For some reason, whenever I do this I start to remember stuff I didn’t know I knew. Somehow I feel I need to know the material well enough to teach it, so I’m forced to learn it.
              5. Compare subject to things you already know: This is one of the most effective learning methods available.Use analogies to use your present knowledge as leverage to acquire new knowledge. This is also a very effective memorization technique.
              6. Translate subjects into drawings or poems: Simple: Images are easier to remember than words. Drawings are images, and poems elicit images.
              7. Watch and listen to entertaining presenters: One of my favorite websites is TED. I get absorbed by the entertaining speakers, and therefore by the information they convey.

As you see, there are plenty of ways in which you can make learning fun. What other tactics to you use?

                          1. I haven’t read through the entire post. I read the LD on line. This year I tried something new. I have a student who cannot read- really. He is quite bright by intelligence testing- but cannot read. So, I worked hard and placed him in the regular classroom for language arts. The teacher had never allowed tht before. She was sure he would fail.
He is on the honor roll for the fourth sixth week period this month. He passed the state reading test by logically working through the questions about hte passage. I could read the questions aloud.
I bring him information about non readers in our society- Schawb, Leno.
This boy will go places and see things that others can only imagine- for he expands his mind through his ears…..
I agree totally on the Math comments. I have several who cannot figure out how to memorize multiplication- but understand all of the basics of math- including some of the most difficult concepts. They are leaders of mathematical discussion.
Having small parts of the brain function differently does not- in any way- equate to retarded.
