Deciding to be old or just getting older

Spread the love

Last week I some of my friends over at Visits to Candy were bemoaning their advanced years – you know they are SOOO old at 35, 36 and 37! Another one of my favorite blog reads is really feeling down about turning 40. So if Alexa is reading – I GET IT NOW!

Alexa use to get miffed at me for whining about MY age when Alexa is chronically just 36 months or so older than me! For that, I apologize.

You see, I think I finally understand that I am at the age now where I have to decide whether this is the beginning of the slippery slope down hill towards death, or an the opportunity to experience life every day for as long as it lasts! It’s all about attitude. I recently started looking at some pictures of my mom at my age. She was without her husband, raising two little girls. I think my mom definitely opted for getting old and it showed in the matronly clothes she chose and her hair styles. Mom did rally for a while in her late 50s and 60s, so I don’t think it’s an irreparable choice, but why waste the time?

My grandma and my Aunt Dorothy on the other hand, have decided that they are getting older, but they were/are not old! My grandma would still paint her nails and put on makeup and enjoyed dressing for my grandpa. Even a stroke and other health problems didn’t dampen her spirit. Aunt Dorothy at 87 shovels her own walk and goes to serve the “old folks” at the home, some of whom I am sure are younger than she is!

On that note, I thought this video was pretty funny. Good for her!

  1. 36 months sounds so much better than 3 years for some reason!

Well – Rob is turning 48 this year – but not until AUGUST – in the meantime I’ll be turning 51 in May!!!

Somehow it didn’t make much difference when I was 40 and he was 37 – when we married…

But, well, I guess a little insanity is settling in – thus the bleach blonde thing I did — gets to the point where I realized if I don’t try it now, I never WILL – and.

can’t even call it a midlife crisis for heaven’s sake!!! I’m PAST midlife!

God bless you elena. you YOUNG CHICKIEPOO you!

  2. OH! I LOVE the video too! THAT is gold!

  3. Fifty this year- I don’t think of myself as old (luckily I have a mentally handicapped student who constantly reminds me that the hills are a bit younger than my jokes).
With age comes a time to reflect (ok- with age and and empty nest). Would I have been “more holy” if I started earlier? Doubt it. I don’t think I would want it near as much.
BTW- I never equate the practice of my religion with my closeness to God….LOL. Typical me.
Religion does not equal faith- but faith brings you to religion.
