Spread the love

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about how my neighbor at the end of the street had been shot in the face by her son. My 9-year-old son and his friends witnessed her coming out of her house crying for help and they called 911.

My neighbor, Shayla, was in the hospital for four weeks. The first two weeks she was in a coma. Her mother moved into her home to take care of her kids and to try to return some normalcy to their lives. Every time I saw her, I would ask how Shayla was and if they needed anything. Tonight Izzy and I were walking home and I saw Shayla’s mom in the yard and I asked about her. To my surprise, Shayla was home! and her mom invited me in to say hi!

I’m happy to report that Shayla looked almost like her old self again! She did lose her eye, but all the swelling and redness is completely gone. If I didn’t know what had happened I might think she just had an eye infection or a nerve damage keeping her eyelid closed or something similar. Shayla told me that most of the bone around her eye socket is gone and they are planning to rebuild it before they put in a prosthetic eye. I honestly think once she gets that done she will look almost like she did before. She still has a bullet in her shoulder that is causing her some pain and she hopes to have that out soon. I teased her a little bit about leaving it in just for the bragging rights of being tough enough to take a bullet. She laughed and said she hadn’t thought of it that way. Folks – she laughed!! She is generally enjoying her pain medications and all of the great hallucinations they provide. But she decided that if the dog starts talking to her she’s going to seriously consider cutting back!

When I asked about her son, she said that she is going to “fight FOR him” to have a thorough medical and psychological examination. She does not think he meant to do this. She believes it is either a drug problem or a psychological one. When we discussed this she sounded like a mom concerned for her baby, her son. There was not one ounce of bitterness or anger. This lady is amazing.

Keep Shayla and her family in your prayers! All of the prayers she has been receiving so far have absolutely worked some miracles!
