Dr. Raymond Moore, Grandfather of Homeschooling, has died.

I was so sorry to hear this. I found so much comfort in Dr. Moore’s books, especially,

Home grown kids: A practical handbook for teaching your children at home and The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook

When it seemed that all of my friends had four year olds reading at the Jr. high level, I found reassurance from Dr. Moore that it was okay for my eight-year-old to just be getting it. Dr. Moore helped me take some of the pressure off of my kids and off of myself and I will be eternally grateful.

I think if Dr. Moore had met Charlotte Mason, they would have had a delightful time together. I should have liked to hear that discussion!

From Home-Spun Schools: Teaching Children at home-What Parents Are Doing and How They Are Doing It

Often our phone rings with calls from parents who badly want to start home schools but have little confidence in their ability to teach. We educators have done a colossal job of brainwashing them into thinking we can out-parent them. Even the University of Chicago’s Benjamin Bloom, whose research helped make early schooling a popular trend in this country, now admits that parents are the best teachers, and that they can be educated as teachers in the home. With a little help, a mother or father can relax and quickly get used to the program, shaping it around their family.
