Christians being Christians

Last Friday I was playing with Rosie on the front porch when I saw them – the Jehovah Witness brigade had hit our street!! I knew because they were all middle-aged to senior citizens, dressed in their finest clothes, carrying literature and their bibles, walking slowly down the street going door to door.

Ya hoo!! I ran and got my bible to have it at the ready – just in case, and waited for them to get to my door.

I very nice older black lady in a long stylish black dress with a gorgeous tote bag came to the door and Rosie started shouting, “Hi! Hi!! HI!! hi hi hi hi hhhhiiiiiEEEEEE!!!”

The lady smiled and said hi back, so I went outside to introduce myself and talk to her. She wanted to know if I was filled mostly with hope, or fear about the future. I pointed to Rosie and said, “why hope of course!”

She smiled and opened her bible to the Lord’s prayer which we read together. We laughed about needing our eye glasses to read such small print. We talked about Rosie and about the neighborhood. Soon another JW lady came to join us and we were making small talk and laughing in short order. They gave me their magazine, we hugged, and off they went after giving Rosie a squeeze.

It wasn’t quite the deep theological discussion that I had hoped for, but it was a nice break in the morning and I really enjoyed just visiting with those ladies for a few minutes out of the day. And we read the Lord’s prayer. That bound us as Christians and sisters. Maybe in the future, the Lord will send me some anxiety for a deeper theological discussion, but for a beautiful summer morning, those ladies were perfect!
