Spread the love

I mentioned in an earlier post that I think it is important in apologetics, but also just for general Christian knowledge to understand where some of our non-Catholic Christian brothers and sisters are coming from. For that reason I decided that I would be following along with the recent book study that Candy Brauer is presenting on her blog at My Blessed Home.

The book is An Understandable History of the Bible by Samuel Gipp and it is on the Chick Publications web site.

As Candy starts her examination of the book with this quote by Dr. Gipp:

“I have spoken to many in meetings in this country and Canada and have stated flatly that this is a life and death matter, for IF we do not have an infallible, pure, inerrant Holy Word of God NOW (NOT in the originals which have been lost forever centuries ago) to rest our weary souls upon for time and eternity, THEN we have but one alternative or option, “Let’s eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die and go to hell.””

I assume he is going to start his argumentation soon in support of the King James Bible as the only “infallible, pure, inerrant Holy Word of God.” In my prior post I linked to a YouTube panel discussion basically says we know that God uses the King James more than any other edition, because it sells more. I’m anxious to see how he supports that in this book.

Candy goes on to say:

…Pure logical conclusion…

The author made some STRONG statements in the introduction. In the book, he will clearly back up those statements with FACTS. Are you ready to learn about some issues that you may have been lied to about? This is a de-programming book. You may have been programmed a certain way about the Bible, and your programming may be corrupted. By reading this book, you’ll see the farcities of what you may have been taught, and the truth will become crystal clear, and quite obvious.

Those who choose to join me in reading this book are at the beginning of a journey. This journey will lead them to spectacular places, if they let it. Are you ready?

Now there is absolutely no way Candy is EVER going to let any of my comments through Nonetheless I did make the following comment to her:

“My first very simple thought is, what is it about this author that you find him to be so authoritative. Just from reading the preface and the introduction it is clear that he has strong opinions ( he hasn’t delivered much substance yet). Yet, why should anyone take his ideas so authoritatively over any other bible scholar?

In my opinion, a truly discerning reader will absolutely have to know that before s/he can determine how much if any weight to give to the rest of the book.

A lot of what Dr. Gipp is going to say seems to hinge on the nonexistent original texts on the bible. I imagine it will make quite “a journey” to go from the originals to the King James version a few millennia later!

Incidentally, Rev. Graham’s How We Got the Bible: Our Debt to the Catholic Church is on line now and might be handy to keep open as you read through the Gipp book. His chapter on the original texts is well worth the read.
