Our classroom!

Spread the love

The theme of the next Lives of Loveliness is The Loveliness of Elegant Simplicity in Learning Spaces. I don’t think ours is very elegant or lively, but it is functional!

About six years ago my husband took part of our basement and built a classroom out of it. He added the dropped ceiling, the drywalling, the bookcase and even installed the chalk board. We picked up the tables at auctions and yard sales. I prayed for a chalk board! And then one night while we were taking a walk I noticed the church behind our house was using a chalk board to keep rain from getting inside of the basement. I went in and asked them for it and they let us carry it home!! The cross on the wall we bought specifically for this room. It has the Blessed Trinity on it and it is made of a heavy metal. My son had it blessed one day when he went to serve mass. If you carefully on the window ledge you will see a framed picture of a little girl. She is the daughter of my friend who died when she was three months old from trisomy 18. At her funeral, her mother asked her daughter to be a patron to the homeschooling families that they knew, and so I keep her mass card framed and in our classroom.

Here is a shot of our chalk board and the built in book shelves.

Here is what our book shelves look like. I wish I could say they were neater, but the kids are usually pulling things out of them all the time. At least I have them in general categories like science, English, Math etc. so we can find things.

This is our other book case. We got it at the public school auction for a few dollars. This is the one that holds most of the literature and easy-to-read books and chapter books.

This is the timeline I made from a kit and some poster boards taped together.

The milk crates hold each child’s books for the year. I have four homeschooled students, and each one has their own crate.

This is the other end of the classroom with our calendar and art table.

So it’s all cleaned and organized now! Ready for our first school day on Tuesday!
