Spread the love

One last thought. Yesterday I read this comment on a blog:

Perhaps I should tell my sons and daughters to abandond their education, get jobs at McDonald’s, get married, have a dozen kids, and try to raise them all on minimum wage.

This person is spending $160K per year to send four kid to college. Definitely a noble and difficult endeavor.

However, the discussion got me thinking. Those aren’t the only two choices. They never have been.

My neighbor is a landlord. He started out with one house that his dad bought for him. He fixed it up himself and sold it for a profit He now has enough properties that it is his full time job to care and manage them. He has a high school diploma and some college, but he lives comfortably. He sets his own hours.

A friend of mine is an electrician. He took the training and apprenticeship and makes a good living (raising eith children) as an electrician. Another gentleman in our homeschool group made very good money as a plumber with his own business.

Mr. Pete went to trade school and owns his own business. He’s not making a fortune yet, but his business has cleared some of the critical watermarks and he is supporting our needs.

I know a lady that started a pooper-scooper business (don’t laugh!) and she has had to subcontract with more business than she can handle. I also know a cake decorator who recently designed and sold a $1000 wedding cake! I know another mom who is making a living wage selling on eBay.

Everyone is blessed with different talents and abilities. Some people are called to higher education and academic pursuits. Other people are called in other directions that are equally as important and dignified as well as lucrative.

BTW, neither Bill Gates or Rush Limbaugh have college degrees.
