Senator Coughlin’s office was kind enough to inform me today of the following:

COUGHLIN WINS HOUSE APPROVAL OF CHARTER SCHOOL SPORTS LEGISLATION

COLUMBUS – The Ohio House of Representatives today approved an amendment championed by State Senator Kevin Coughlin (R – Cuyahoga Falls) to allow students who attend charter schools that are sponsored by their local public school systems to participate in sports and extracurricular activities that are also sponsored by their local school system.

“I am pleased that the legislature has moved quickly to clarify this issue so that students and school districts that are caught in limbo can begin working to ensure that everyone gets the opportunity they deserve to participate,” Coughlin said.

Coughlin began work on the legislation after a situation arose in the Akron Public School District in which a student from the Akron Digital Academy was prevented from participating on the Firestone Akron High School Swim Team even though the Akron Public School System sponsors the Akron Digital Academy.

“When a student opts to attend a charter school that’s sponsored by his or her local public school district, he or she should not be asked to forfeit the opportunities to participate in extra curricular activities that would normally be available to them,” Coughlin said. “This legislation clarifies that point in statute so that public charter school students will be ensured a chance to participate in the future.”

The amendment was added to Senate Bill 18, a measure that was also sponsored by Coughlin.
