Here’s an exerpt!

As it is, the board permits participation in sports and other activities to its full-time students who meet attendance and eligibility requirements. The major concern is that allowing the academy student to join the swim team would set a troublesome precedent, inviting others who have chosen to leave the public system to cherry-pick the programs they want. The point is made, equally reasonably, that athletics and special programs are strong incentives to help students keep up their grades and attendance and also to stabilize public school enrollment. The fear is that private students won’t have any incentive to enroll if popular programs are available to them.

While the board is assessing LaVictoire’s request, it should consider that the incentive could work the other way. Access to public school offerings could just as effectively entice non-students back for the variety. The goal should be a compromise that allows private students such as LaVictoire to participate, with the clear understanding that public school students have priority of consideration at all times.
