Women who expect to live a long time have boys!

It’s true! I use to want to live to 100 or more. (My great grandma made it to 95 and I have two aunts who are over 100 years old.)

So I had 4 sons in a row!!

Whether a woman gives birth to a boy or a girl is linked to how long she expects to live.

Women who believe they have a long life ahead of them are more likely to give birth to boys than girls, shows research that supports the theory that women with few resources will gain more grandchildren from daughters than sons.

The idea is that sons that are well looked after grow up strong and healthy and mate many women, while those less cared for cannot compete for mates. While this has been shown in developing populations, where poorly nourished women have more daughters than sons, it has not previously been demonstrated in affluent Western society.
