Spread the love

I heard from two old friends from my AOL Debate board days yesterday! Hi to Nicole and Ruth.

In case the rest of the world that DOES NOT have AOL isn’t aware, America On Line subscribers belong to an exclusive world within the internet that is available only to AOL subscribers. It’s rather nice. You can access information with “key words” and never really have to venture too far outside of the AOL confines. For example, I only “surfed the net” when I wanted to look something up for a debate that I was having on AOL. It never occurred to me that perhaps the internet was an interesting place to be a part of outside of AOL. The neatest thing as far as I was concerned, was participating in the AOL community, particularly the message boards.

Now what you have to understand is that the technology AOL uses for message boards is like none other. You don’t have an annoying long string to follow, you can find comments and replies almost effortlessly. They even had the ability when I left, to “Filter” out certain posters. For example, if Suzy really annoys the heck out of you, but your sister enjoys her comments, you can filter Suzy and never have to read her again, but her comments would still come through for your sister to read. If Suzy said something that created a great stir however, you could go back and unblock her to read the comment for yourself. It truly is a great system and I haven’t seen any message boards that come as close.

So, it’s no surprise that when someone leaves AOL, message board friends are slow to follow. Those message boards are definitely addicting, but more than that, they are like little communities with all the amenities. No need to travel to another place.

So I’m glad when my AOL friends find me. Hope they’ll spread the word. Maybe use some of the articles and such I post in a debate “on the boards” sometime. Sign the guest book or drop me a line to say hi! I really do miss those old days sometimes.

Please feel free to leave a comment under the posting, or sign my Spiritbook (guestbook). You can chat with me on the tag board to the right!
