Works for Me Wednesday – Business of Being Born

Spread the love

When I was in labor with my first son, I received a lot of interventions and medical procedures that I now think put me on a direct path to the operating room and a Cesarean. Sure, I read all the latest pregnancy books of the time (and no, A Girlfriend’s guide and What To Expect When You’re Expecting are NOT the best sources of information out there) but when I was on the spot I had absolutely no idea of what options I had and because I didn’t know, I didn’t have any options.

A lot has changed in the past 19 years, but the state of birth for American Woman has actually gotten worse. The attitudes of young women towards the ability of their bodies to birth their babies without a lot of medical interference is severely worn away and the C-section rate is higher than it was in 1989, when I had my first baby. And the real kicker is that young women are subjecting themselves to this painful, invasive and even life threatening procedure WITHOUT AN INCREASE A DECREASE MORTALITY AND MORBIDITY. In other words we’re seeing lots of surgery, generating lots of money and not getting better results for babies.

For the last few months I have been blogging about the movie, The Business of Being Born. It is an excellent film that examines why birth is the way it is in this country and what women NEED to know before they enter into the health care system to deliver their babies. It also examines homebirth and midwifery as very real and safe options for women.

And now the Business of Being Born is available for viewing for FREE! I urge all young women of childbearing age to see it and think about it.

  1. Great post!

We here in The Netherlands are supposed to give birth at home, unless there are medical reasons to go to hospital.
We’re educated well, and we are treated well.
Our midwifes are trained different than american midwifes. Here it’s a profession that stands on it’s own.

I also like the fact that we’re raised that giving birth is something natural, so we don’t grow up expecting painrelief.

All is for the wellbeing of the child.

I have 6 children. Lost 2 extra because of reasons we later found out.
    So I’m an experienced mom.

The pain of birth hasn’t made me any worse.
And giving birth in the natural way has´t been bad for me at all.

I feel more confident in myself and have more respect for myself.

I so hope my daughters will have gotten the message. Well, I´m sure they have.

Feel welcome to read my post about what works for me.

    You can find it ;;here::

    Enjoy your day!

  2. Thanks for the tip. I was given an induction with my first daughter (worst decision of my life) and as a result had serious complications that resulted in surgical repair 2 months postpartum and have been told I can never have a V-delivery again.

With my second I had a Csection and while it was easier on my body than the induction, it was a $20,000 operation that has now left me uninsurable for maternity coverage. We are currently trying to get pregnant with baby number 3 with the knowledge that we will be paying for a c-section on our own since insurance refuses.(As scary as that is I refuse to allow the insurance company to determine how many children I will be able to have. That’s God’s job!)

I think many women don’t realize the effects of making decisions for induction and c-section surgery. If I could do it all over again, I would definitely have gone the midwife/natural route and avoided the induction at all costs. I wish I had been more educated and not trusted my doctor as blindly.

Thanks again for you post! I hope others learn more about this.

  3. I too agree with the previous two commenters. If God blesses us with a baby, it will be delivered by a midwife, at home. Women have been giving birth For. Ever. I’m not afraid to do it either!

  4. Bless You! I am the proud mom of four kids born outside the hospital setting. I received expert compassionate care from both my midwives. I live in Missouri, where it is basically illegal to have a trained midwife assist at a home birth, and I wish everyone could see this film. It is beautiful and thought-provoking.
